There’s something captivating about watching a child discover the world. The way their eyes widen when they see a butterfly take flight or how they giggle uncontrollably over something as simple as bubbles floating in the air. Their awe is unfiltered and raw, and it reminds me of how Jesus said,

“Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3).  

But somewhere along the way, we grow up. Life gets louder. Responsibilities pile on, and suddenly, we’re too distracted to see the butterfly or stop to chase bubbles. The goodness of God, so evident in the little things, gets overshadowed by our schedules, our worries, and even our doubts and we slip, losing sight of wonder.  

It’s not that God’s goodness has changed; it’s that our hearts become crowded. Jesus spoke to this when He said,

“The worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful” (Matthew 13:22).

It’s easy to let the chaos and clutter of life drown out the still, small voice reminding us of God’s faithfulness.  

I once heard someone say that gratitude is the key to noticing God’s fingerprints all over our lives. But gratitude starts with paying attention, with seeing the world as a child does. A child doesn’t need a grand display to be amazed. A sunrise, a kind word, or even the sound of rain is enough to stir awe in their heart. When was the last time we let something simple fill us with that kind of wonder?  

At its core, the gospel invites us back to that kind of simplicity. It says, “You don’t have to earn this. You don’t have to complicate it. Come as you are.” Jesus declared,

“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

Notice that He doesn’t ask us to perform or prove ourselves first. He simply says, “Come.”  

Maybe that’s where the disconnect lies. We try to make faith about doing instead of being.About striving instead of resting. But when we step back into that childlike trust, we start to see the world differently. We notice His goodness in the small things, like the laughter of a friend or the provision that comes just when we need it.

Psalm 34:8 says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.”

 What’s strikes me most about this verse is the invitation to experience God’s goodness firsthand. It’s not just something to know in theory. It’s something to feel, to live, to breathe and to lean into. Tangible and real.  

When was the last time you “tasted” His goodness? Maybe it’s been a while, and that’s okay. God’s goodness isn’t hiding. It’s in the little things we often overlook. It’s in the first and last rays of sunlight, the sound of a bird’s song, the fall of summer rains, or even the way a stranger’s smile can brighten a hard day.  
 
So, how do we recapture that sense of wonder? I think it starts with slowing down. Instead of rushing through the day, pause and get in the habit of asking, “Where do I see God in this moment?” Maybe it’s in the quiet whisper of the Holy Spirit, or maybe it’s in something as simple as the breeze bringing refresh to the stillness of the air.

It also means letting go of the pressure to complicate our faith. The gospel is as simple as it is profound:
God loves us, He sent Jesus for us, and He invites us to walk with Him. That’s it. And yet, that truth is enough to spark awe every single day if we let it.

If you’ve found yourself struggling to notice the good around you, ask God to renew your sense of awe. Pray for a heart that marvels at the little things and sees His hand in every detail. As the psalmist wrote,

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands” (Psalm 19:1).

Creation itself is a daily reminder of who He is.  

Resolve to live with eyes wide open, hearts soft, and minds curious. To embrace the childlike faith that finds joy in the simplest things and trusts that God’s goodness is always there waiting to be seen.  

We pray for you today, eyes that see the goodness that surrounds you, that even in hard seasons your heart would learn to find those silver linings and hold them close, breathing deep the reprieve that His beauty offers. We pray that you might be surprised by what you notice when you’re willing to see with fresh eyes and enamoured again by the awe and wonder of a God who created consolations and Sunkissed sands all with you in mind.   

Friend, His goodness has always been there… sometimes, we just need to remember how to look for it.
