Are you Salty?
Matthew 5: 13-16 AMP
13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has lost its taste (purpose), how can it be made salty? It is no longer good for anything, but to be thrown out and walked on by people [when the walkways are wet and slippery].
14 “You are the light of [Christ to] the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good deeds and moral excellence, and [recognize and honor and] glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Are you tuned in to hearing the voice of the Lord?
Or do you find yourself rushing through your days just to get to the end of the day and then repeat it again day after day wondering where God is in your life?
The world around us is full of distractions, chatter, noise and constant demands of our attention. We need to be purposeful in setting aside quality time with Jesus so as to not lose our ‘saltiness” for as scriptures say if salt is no longer salty it is no longer good for anything!
We see since the beginning of the Old Testament that “Salt” is mentioned in preserving meat- to maintain the integrity of the food and keep it from spoiling.
We also see in the Old Testmant that salt is mandatory for all offerings – I believe symbolizing the eternal and indestructible covenant God made with His people.
We also know that salt impedes the action of yeast in bread – so in Scriptures leaven (yeast) is often seen to symbolize sin and a rebellious attitude, as well as the ability to negatively affect others (Gal 5:9, 1 Cor 5).
So one could say the inclusion of this mineral, therefore, can represent the preservation and maintenance of purity in a world that can cause corruption. So when Jesus calls us (His followers) the “Salt of the Earth” we can summize that He is referring to us being called to live a life of purity and to avoid sin and rebellion, and to be confident in the covenant He has made with us. Thus, in choosing to believe in His Son Jesus, allows us to endure all things, regardless of our circumstances, knowing that this covenant is solid, unbreakable and everlasting.
Being a son or daughter of God and having your identity as a co-heir with Christ -means you are royalty and have been set apart to shine! We aren’t created to sit in the shadows or just ‘get by’ in this journey of life on the planet but yet how can we make a kingdom impact if we aren’t tuned in and thus representing God as ambassadors?
We can live this life as a tourist – just observing and not engaging or we can purposely step out and choose to be the hands and feet of Jesus to those around us!
Are we so desensitized by chaos that we no longer recognize the voice of God speaking to us, prompting us, leading us.
Are we so focused on self and what we need and want and how we think we can make that happen that we forget to pause and reflect and look to Jesus for His best path for us?
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” ~ Proverbs 3:5-6 is one of my favourite all time scriptures. My grandparents had one of those old wooden plaques that hung on the wall in the dining room and I still remember reading it and being encouraged every time.
Let’s pray shall we?
Daddy God, I pray for an ever increasing hunger for more of You and a desire to spend time with you in prayer and praise and worship. I want a desire for the truth of Your Word and a love for Your laws and Your ways. Teach me Lord to live by faith and to be led by the Holy Spirit – I want to be available to do and be all You have created me to be and to do. I want my choices to be a reflection of your goodness and kindness and faithfulness as I step out of my comfort zone to be Your hands and feet Jesus to those around me. I don’t want to be wise in my own eyes but instead that Your holiness permeates my entire being so much that I live a life set apart for Your purposes. Help me to be focused on You all the days of my life.
AMEN
God bless you 😊
